RP 101
[/u][/center]Role-playing, or RP, is a form of gaming undertaken by those that, obviously, want to assume the role of someone, other than themselves, in a usually fictional situation. There are different types of RP, the most common of which is dice-rolling, made famous by the game named Dungeons & Dragons. RPing on forums is yet another type of RP, because in this, there is, in most cases, no physical connection with the users due to the informal internet that inhibits such… intimate connections that are able to be undertaken with other types of RP. The internet allows those from around the country, and world, to come together on a single website, and thus creating a mini-community in which the people act out whatever is the main theme of the forum. The theme for this forum in particular is Bleach, an anime… actually, you should know about that already if you’re joining, so I’ll skip the explanation on what Bleach is. If you believe that it is used for laundry, leave now.
So, anyways, RPs that are located on the forums are always written out, essay style. The thing that may differentiate from forum to forum is the form in which one is required to write. Some forums require their members to write in first person, but, in this RP, you are to write in third-person (He, she), past tense (It already happened). This is in place because nothing flows smoothly if there is someone writing in first person, present tense, and the other is writing in third-person. The majority of the more experienced RPers know that most of the RP forums use the same format, so, it should not be much of a problem if this is kept true for this website as well.
Here is an example, though it is a short one:
Hitsugaya’s eyes flew upwards, hearing a sound come from above; he got up from his chair, slowly moving towards the door, cautiously approaching, as if he expected something to move through the office’s wooden ceiling and attack him. It was plausible, of course, but unlikely, so he got to the door, slowly twisting the handle…
Sorry to kill it there, but there was no reason to write a big one, because it was written to show what third-person, past tense would look like in an RP. Of course, there are other things that are necessary to know about RPs such as this one that are the cause of arguments; yes, I speak of battles. It may be simple in one’s imagination, attacking, defending, and dying, but for some innate reason, most humans want to take charge, be that hero that makes it through every hit, striking their enemy down in one blow after seeing through the big attack. Let me say this is as
So, if you did not read the rules already, do not metagame (Make an invincible character, though it probably won’t be accepted in the first place if you do, don’t try it.) or godmod/move. The latter means that you control the actions of another character, or the affect of your attack on that character. Everyone should be playing nice, and if it was a legitimately unavoidable or solid attack, they should be getting hit. So, you do not need to, nor are you allowed to, say that “[Enter opponent’s name here] got hit badly, nearly losing his right arm.”.
Examples of godmodding and godmoving, respectively
+Let’s say that you are Yuki, and your opponent is “B”+
-Yuki attacked B with a fierce blow to the head, knocking him out, and allowing Yuki to finish B off with a flourish as he stabbed him through the heart.
-Yuki watched as B moved closer to him, just in range of his ultimate attack, one that was completely unable to be blocked or endured. Yuki delievered the blow, killing B instantly.
Of course, the latter is assuming that B never said that he or she moved. Also, I happened to stick an example of a metagaming attack.
So, there is your 5-10 minute lesson on RPing. Go out there and use proper English, or Japanese if there be reasonable cause to use words from that language.
